Social Chatter: Social Media Marketing Talk Show - Episode 316 What Is A Metaverse and How Will the Meta Company Evolve Connections? This week, we're talking about Metaverse from Facebook. If you haven't heard, Facebook is rebranding their company and calling it Meta. One primary reason they're doing this is so that they can get out of the stigma that it's Facebook. Some users, primarily teenagers, don't want to use Facebook because their parents or grandparents are on it. By rebranding, Facebook can evolve not only their products, but also help users grow their connections. Here is a look at the Metaverse and all of the things that they're looking to do with it. Why Is Facebook Rebranding to Meta? Facebook wants to distance themselves from other companies they own, yet bring them closer at the same time. Some users will not use certain products if they see it is owned by Facebook company. They often cite it's what their grandparents or parents use, so they try and avoid it. At the same time, Facebook wants to attract a younger audience. The switch to Meta from Facebook may help adjust the users they attract. With Meta, it makes it easier to arrange their products, while building a more unified ecosystem, with diverse audiences. What Is A Metaverse? Facebook thinks the Metaverse will be another evolution of the internet. If you think about it, they own multiple products. Right now, they're all separate. With a Metaverse, they can become pieces in the bigger picture. Which Brands Fall Under the Metaverse? The Metaverse will be comprised of Facebook, Instagram, Oculus, WHatsApp, along with other companies that they acquire. What Will Happen to My Facebook Account? Your Facebook account, along with other social media accounts on Instagram, WhatsApp, etc will not be affected by Meta. They will become pieces in the bigger Metaverse picture. When Will Facebook Change to Meta? Now. If you check out the Facebook blog, you'll see they have already started to rename it Meta, versus being from Facebook. Why the Metaverse Matters For Your Business While you cannot do much to prepare for the Metaverse (it's still a ways off), you can start to think about building ways to segment your offline and online personalities. We like to think of the Metaverse like the movie Ready Player One or Avatar, where people enter a virtual world and can concoct an entirely different persona than they are in real life. Right now, your business should begin to dabble in areas where you normally don't spend a lot of time. For example, Oculus and even WhatsApp. Eventually, they'll all become pieces in the Metaverse. While you don't need to be a heavy user, you can begin to experiment with them and see if your connections from Facebook spend any time in Oculus, which we think will eventually become the official hardware we use to interface with people in a virtual world. It can take some getting used to wearing a headset, or moving in a virtual world. This could be a great way to see what it is like, and hopefully spawn new, creative ideas for your business. How to Produce High-Quality Virtual Events On this week’s show, we spoke with Mike Allton about producing virtual events. Here’s what he had to say. Mike was previously a guest on episode 175 of our social media marketing talk show. You can watch that episode here: Mike has been producing large virtual events this past year. He shared his insights on improving the online event experience for both attendees and businesses. What do we mean by virtual events? Virtual events are events where people don't need to leave their homes to attend. They can watch on social media or on a dedicated website. What is your new approach to virtual events? What are key must-have elements for engagement and interactions? Create magical moments that everyone can access, even if they're not attending. You'll also want to tap into virtual table talks and implement global chat. This way people who cannot attend an in-person event, can still feel like they're a part of it. How have you developed brand partnerships for your virtual events? If I'm a sponsor, I may be paying to be part of your event, but at the same time, expect certain things such as access to attendee data, as well as certain exposures. Brand partnerships often receive some sort of value in return. They may have opportunities to participate in an event, such as at a virtual booth, or the ability to share from the stage. A few tools to support this are Hopin and AirMeet. How has influencer marketing contributed to event success? If you want to be successful with influencer marketing, make sure influencers have an easy way to share your event. Pay attention to the platform you select too. You want to be able to properly track referrals to see which influencers are driving the most referrals. In addition, spend time creating promotional graphics, social media posts, text and more that is customized for each person. They'll be more likely to share content that is "done for you" and ready to be shared. Finally, what is the future for conferences and events -- large and small? How will virtual attendees interact or will they? According to Mike Allton, hybrid events will become less popular in the coming year. They create FOMO for people who are attending virtually, but unless the technology and usage changes, attendees might not feel engaged. Instead, they might feel more like they're missing out on those magical moments that in-person attendees are sharing on social media.
