Facebook Live Video for Groups and Events
This week, Facebook announced they are rolling out Facebook Live Video for Groups and Events.
This is a major update to Facebook Live Video.
Previously, you could stream Facebook Live Video for Pages.
Today, you can now share live video to your Facebook Group and for Facebook Events.
“Going live” on Facebook feels special because you are going live with the people you care about."
This opens up a host of possibilities for your business like never before for to use live video throughout your social strategy.
In addition to the announcement that you can now create Facebook Live Video and share it with groups and events, Facebook also added a lot of powerful new interactive features to live video. Here are some of them.
- Live reactions
- Replay comments
- Live filters
Facebook Live Video also added a number of discovery tools such as the ability to view a live video map. Here are a few of these new tools that they announced.
- Invite friends
- Live video descriptions
- Live map
Overall, I'm really excited about all of the possibilities available for Facebook Live Video and am already working on ways to use it here at Social Chefs.
Facebook Automatic Alternative Text
Hot on the heels of last week's announcement of #Twitter image descriptions, #Facebook is now adding "automatic...

Facebook announced automatic alternative text.
This is similar to Twitter image descriptions, which we talked about last week.
With Facebook Automatic Alternative Text, when you upload a photo, it will "recognize the content of certain images and create subtitles for them."
If you use a screen-reading software, it will read aloud the text that is displayed and you can hear a description telling you about the contents of the photo.
This feature is aimed at helping make your content more accessible for people who are blind or visually impaired, you also stand to benefit when you're descriptive with your content because this opens your content up to an audience that might not have been able to experience it before.
Twitter Inline Direct Message Button
Also this week was an announcement from Twitter. They announced inline message button.
For anyone who has used Twitter, it can be frustrating to have a public conversation with a business only to tell you to send them a direct message.
While Twitter made it easier by adding a dedicated messages button at the bottom of the Twitter app, that required an extra step.
With the new Twitter inline direct message button, it's a whole lot easier now.
If you want to send someone a direct message, there is now a "mail" button underneath their tweet.
When you press it, it opens the direct message window. Select the people you want to direct message and you'll quickly create a private message to them.
After you're finished, you can return right back to your Twitter stream.
Twitter Wins Right to Stream NFL Games
Another announcement this week was from Twitter.
They won the rights to stream 10 Thursday night NFL games globally.
This is big news for Twitter because it puts them back in the spotlight at a time when there has been a lot of discussion around their declining growth.
With this new deal, I also expect to see more usage of Periscsope or Vine, both companies Twitter owns, as the deal progresses.
Both of these are powerful, untapped resources at the moment, that could allow fans to create micro-content, such as short Vine videos from game highlights, that provide fantastic opportunities for the NFL to use to broaden their appeal among fans.
Tools
In addition to sharing the latest in social media news from this past week, we also highlighted some great tools and apps to check out.
Disqus
One of the easiest ways to add comments to your blog or website is to use Disqus. In fact, you've probably seen Disqus's commenting system on many of the blogs you currently read, such as this one.
Many bloggers use it because they make it easy to comment on any blog without having to create new accounts for each system. With Disqus, you can login a variety of ways such as using Disqus, Facebook, Twitter and so on.
If you've ever received comments on your blog though, you know how difficult it can be to respond to them when you're using your mobile device.
Disqus has made that process a lot easier now with the Disqus mobile app.
With Disqus, you can moderate new comments you've received on your blog or website from anywhere! This also makes it easier for you to stay engaged with your audience.
Disqus is a free app that you absolutely need for managing your own blog comments as well as for staying on-top of comments you've made on other blogs that you follow.

Do you feel like you're always missing out on what's new in technology, podcasting and more? If so, you should check out Product Hunt
What Product Hunt does is instead of you having to go to multiple websites to find what's new, you can just check Product Hunt.
For example, did you know there is an unofficial button for Snapchat at let's you embed your Snapchat profile on your blog or website.

The last tool we wanted to share this week is MyPermissions - Privacy Cleaner.
Do you know what data your social media channels have access to? Rather than go to each network individually, you can use MyPermissions - Privacy Cleaner to help you check.
Here are a few of the things MyPermissions - Privacy Cleaner can do for you.
- Scan your social networks to see what apps have access to your information, and what data they have access to.
- Identify social networks you are no longer using, but still have access to your data
- Provide real-time alerts when apps have access to your personal information
MyPermissions - Privacy Cleaner is a free app that can help you keep an eye on your personal information and save you a lot of time in the process.
If you haven't taken the time to review your privacy settings on your social media channels, this app can quickly help you with that.

So is the Facebook Live Video kind of like a combination of Google Video Hangouts and Periscope?
Sort of. With Facebook Live Video, you’re only broadcasting in one direction at the moment so it’s a bit more like Periscope. We suspect that at some point, you’ll be able to have Facebook Live Video where multiple Facebook Pages are broadcasting from one window, but that’s a bit off.
It’s more like Periscope @petersaydak:disqus, although Google Hangout functionality probably isn’t that far away.
