Welcome to this week’s episode of Social Chatter where we cover the latest social media news from this past week.
Each episode of Social Chatter is available as a blog post or video.
Let’s see what’s cooking in social media this week with your hosts, Christian Karasiewicz and Vincent Orleck!
Watch This Week’s Social Media Updates
Instagram Rebranding
This week, Instagram announced a rebranding.
Not only did they launch new icons for their apps:
They also cleaned up the look-and-feel of Instagram.
Here’s what Instagram looks like now after they rebranded.
While there aren’t any noticeable changes to how Instagram works, the new look-and-feel gives it a clean look.
Instagram Brand Profiles
Also this week, we saw Instagram was testing brand profiles.
A few things you’ll notice here are that there is a contact button on Instagram profiles as well as a category listing.
This is similar to how Facebook Pages let you define what your page is about.
When you press on the contact button on Instagram brand profiles, you can email them or get directions.
Facebook Groups Discover Tab
If you’re using Facebook Groups, this week, Facebook rolled out a new discover tab.
The new Facebook Groups discover tab makes it easy for you to find relevant groups to join. You can also easily jump into different categories for Facebook Groups that you might want to join.
You can access the new Facebook Groups discover tab two ways.
One way is through the Facebook mobile app.
In the Facebook mobile app, you can access the Facebook Groups discover tab under More > Groups.
You also get the ability to locate groups based on a category.
A second way is to use the Facebook Groups app.
With the Facebook Groups app, you get an entirely separate “discover” tab.
You lose the ability to find groups based on a category you are interested in.
If you need help learning everything about Facebook Groups, don’t forget to take the course.
Periscope Launches Search and Save and Drone Streaming
Another piece of social media news this week comes from Periscope.
They have rolled out three new features.
One of those is the ability to search for broadcasts you are interested in.
Using the search tool, you can quickly jump to scopes you want to view. They also have new topics for “First Scope” as well as “GoPros and Drones.”
The second feature Periscope launched is the ability to save broadcasts beyond 24 hours.
When your broadcasts are saved, “your broadcasts will be automatically saved on Periscope and Twitter with comments and hearts.”
A third feature is the ability to broadcast from supported DJI drones. You can then narrate depending on the camera you are streaming from.
Here is what that looks like.
Broadcast from a bird's eye view with drones! Available on iOS soon.https://t.co/J3GfdW4JRX

YouTube Launches Native Sharing for Mobile App
One last piece of social media news this week is from YouTube.
YouTube is updating their mobile app to add a dedicated messaging tab.
Instead of copying and pasting links into other apps, you can have conversations right inside the new YouTube app.
You can also send videos to individuals or a group of people with the new YouTube message feature.
Tools
In addition to sharing the latest in social media news from this past week, we also highlighted some great tools and apps to check out.
Roger
Are you starting to dictate notes to your staff, for emails or when writing blog posts?
Roger is a mobile app that let’s you send notes to your friends.
It also works with Slack, voicemail, Facebook Messenger and even Alexa.
This way you can send notes to your friends, communicate with your team, buy things you’re out of, and send messages to your Facebook contacts, all from one app!
Roger is a free app that is available for iOS and Android

If you’re a WhatsApp user, how many times have you been interrupted by a new message on your mobile device - when you’re on your desktop?
Everytime you get interrupted, this can interrupt your work and lead to a loss of productivity. Fortunately, this week, WhatsApp rolled out a desktop version of their software for PC and Mac users.
To get started, all you need to do is download WhatsApp for PC or Mac and connect it using your mobile device.
Now when a new WhatsApp message comes through on your mobile device, you can answer it right on your desktop!
Download WhatsApp for PC or MacGboard
The last tool we wanted to share this week is Gboard by Google.
Gboard is a fascinating app. It is essentially a keyboard.
It has the added benefit of being able to search for GIFs and emojis.
What makes Gboard so unique (and awesome to use) is that you can also search Google right from your keyboard and send the results immediately.
For example, maybe a customer asked you to send them a link to your social media channels?
Rather than open the mobile browser on your device, go to Google, and then search, you can stay within your email app, search for the link, and quickly share it with them.
I’ve had a chance to try out this app and so far I find Gboard can save a lot of time.
Download GboardWrap-up
That’s it for this week’s episode of Social Chatter.

I am apart of so many groups!
@ATWNetworking absolutely
@AustinIuliano DOPE?
yeah fb groups app is cool use it all the time
Here’s a short tutorial on how to use Facebook Live Video for Groups. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIKoQseNDj4&list=PLQPLIBK6Jhdmn9guf2t2oMwxYnBxi-6hk&index=2
did not know that – cool, good to know
@BronsonDigital 🙂
Live streaming into groups is about giving good content
@AustinIuliano YES
Can I pop in and say a thing or two?
@AustinIuliano real time, relevant stuff
Agree I think there are a few ways to use them but limited content with better discussion is a great recipe
my blab screen keeps doing this jumping thing… is that wierd??
Powerful members areas in groups 😉
@NextGenBizMan yeah mine is too sometimes
@VincentOrleck like a glitch
no worries
like a, like a BZZZT thing lol
is this someone’s actual phone?
@BronsonDigital yes
that’s cool
how do you do that?
@FastpupThe you can check out a course I created. That should help you get started. https://www.socialchefs.com/courses/facebook-groups-training/
Katch.me didn’t get enough funding to stay around
Can you use DSLR or Gopro’s with Blab or pericope?
@JasonGrace with periscope yes
and yes, this is christian’s phone live
startups make that mistake all the time. building a feature on top of another platform is not a business
no surprise that katch got shut down
Thank you for that info, can you use it with blab or strictly phone camera?
Don’t be so sure it is 😉 one of their differentiating values!!
Did you guys see the Drone Periscope @mitchoates did?
@ATWNetworking because of ghost codes, i think it def is coming
yes I’m on blab
screen is super glitchy
what is te app t o share with blab?
Very Cool info
@VincentOrleck Why would they need to – does it work and is it growing? 😉
@BronsonDigital blab has its own screen-sharing.
yup
yep- comes with the territory of loving Blab 🙂
an app as flawed as me 😉
@BronsonDigital the app I use is this one: http://www.airsquirrels.com/reflector/
🙂
@VincentOrleck Blab’s terms of service say that you are not to use it for commercial purposes
@socialchefs cool, thanks
I love updates 😀
I remember when Tom was my only friend lol
@JasonGrace lol. I kept Tom in my top 8

@lauravanderhye BOOM
so bad ass
so cool
yes
how does one connect a dron to periscope?
The featured one is over a beach in Sydney 🙂
Can you turn the phone layout to Landscape?
it’s on API connection in BETA
Sick
me neither… these are NOT the drones you are looking for….
i have two clients that use drones. one is an engineering co and the other is a landscape architect this is good for them
so do the GoPros and drones connect via bluetooth?
where can we find this info?
Google search gave me nothin’!
you got it!
Topic 5: YouTube native sharing feature for mobile apps http://www.wired.com/2016/05/youtubes-new-messenger-means-youll-never-leave-youtube/
@NextGenBizMan Love that idea
Right? Wanna FLY like Superman!?! That could literally make that happen!
imagine if a 360 camera and a drone camera integrsted for a 6-axis VR experience…. KAPEEEEW!
Sounds like a franchise opportunity, real-time VR drone adventures
on youtube
LOL
I agree with you, it’s way too much
90% trolls
It’s competition and capitalism. Grow or die.
But YT was all about engagement even before Google bought it? Comments have always been super important.
I wonder if they had customer demand for it
Nope–they have to innovate or they will die
Not from me, but I’m not big on youtube
Have you guys used the direct messaging in IG?
@designguychris yes…rarely
same
thumbzoom!
its HUGE…. one handed zoom is a God-send!
@NextGenBizMan How are you using that day-to-day
what… Snapchat?
The zoom
@VincentOrleck, all the live video moves are about worldwide domination of viewer eyeballs to monetize with sponsors and advertisers. Facebook is launching a morning show soon and Twitter is going to carry NFL Thursday night football.
old news
Tool Time with Tim “The Toolman” Taylor
@WhatsThe411TV i cant wait for nfl on twitter…its going to change things
Tool 1: Roger
iOS: https://www.socialchefs.com/go/roger-ios/
@NextGenBizMan The zoom, you say it’s a God-send but I don’t see it bringing that much value
Android: https://www.socialchefs.com/go/roger-android/
Hi @designguychris I dont zoom every snapp but its sure handy when I DO want to zoom
@VincentOrleck Exactly! We can’t wait either.
@Designguychris too bad it hasn’t brought you any value- its brought a lot to me 🙂
Hi everyone!
@NextGenBizMan I’m saying it’s not “god-send” value
@WhatsThe411TV i think it leads to much bigger more robust broadcasts and deals in the year after
@designguychris right…to you, its not
@designguychris to me, it is… makes sense?
“Roger”?
@NextGenBizMan Which is why I asked for examples : )
Watch my snaps bud 😉
Okay tiger
Anchor you tell a story and people add to it
Is Roger like Zello? Does the recipient have to be on line to hear in real time or does it record and hold the audio message?
@designguychris like, in my head, you can use a zoom feature on a camera… why should it be any different on a video app like Snapchat? Right? Like, in my mind youre asking me for examples of how zoom creates value for video….
Anchor: https://www.socialchefs.com/go/anchor-ios/
Tool 2: WhatsApp for Mac
https://www.socialchefs.com/go/whatsapp-mac/
App not just browser – love it – great idea!!
@NextGenBizMan Totally agree, and I have seen some companies using it (i.e. MunchPak) to make the videos a bit more dynamic… but it’s nothing groundbreaking. Zoom is typically a core feature so now that SC has it, that’s awesome
We use whatsapp for work comms on location
@NextGenBizMan I guess I was trying to learn how others are using it and you seemed like an advocate. Could be cool to do a close up , contest like “Guess what this is” and then later on reveal it with a zoom out. Could also just bring the phone back though too
Tool 3: Gboard https://www.socialchefs.com/go/gboard-ios/
Ahhh okay yeah I hear that, much more usable, so it was more about the interaction than the zoom itself. Makes more sense now
well for me, I love it because I don’t have to hold down the video circle with one hand and use the two-finger pinch to zoom with the other when recording a snap. Now I just slide my thumb off the circle to zoom…. so it helps me that way.
I’m an interface designer, so that’s the point of view I relate to!
@NextGenBizMan That’s a great example, well outside the box. Thanks!
@designguychris I saw a dude today use the zoom tool while recording and pinned emojiis to the video, made it look like dancing emojiis, was pretty fun lol
@designguychris yes yes lol sorry I totally had the wrong idea lol
Im sorry bud
No problem, we figured it out
@designguychris indeed!
@NextGenBizMan Later!
@NextGenBizMan later brochacho
gotta split peeps! Have a great day! Remember the Golden Rule of Social Media… You GET what you GIVE 😉
@designguychris thx chris!!
Gotta jet, but I subscribed so I’ll catch you guys again next time, thank you
@designguychris thanks!
@CyberSocialWork thanks!
this is a great tutorial, good stuff!!!
