Social Chatter: Social Media Marketing Talk Show - Episode 295 The Instagram Affiliate Program, Sell Creator Products, Generate Revenue On IG This week, we have the Instagram affiliate program. This new program from Instagram is will allow "select creators can tag products from the brands they work with or use Shops if they have their own product line." In the coming months, Instagram plans to roll out a native affiliate tool. Creators can then discover new products to feature on Instagram, that they can earn a commission on within the Instagram app. According to Instagram, products will be tagged with "eligible for commission" at the top of a post. pic.twitter.com/NUH0yA7GSi— Social Chefs (@socialchefs) June 11, 2021 In addition to the affiliate program, Instagram is also rolling out badges on Instagram Live content. You'll be able to earn extra payouts when you meet certain criteria. This includes using Live badges, going live with another account, etc. Facebook is also rolling out Stars Challenges, that operate the same way. You can earn Stars for reaching milestones, such as broadcasting a certain number of hours, earning a set number of Stars in a timeframe and so on. The Instagram affiliate program is slowly rolling out to more accounts. For now, you can access the Instagram Live badges. Just update your app and you should be prompted. Why An Instagram Affiliate Program Matters For Your Business You're often told that your business needs to be on social media. It can be extremely challenging though to get traction. You get to the point where you're putting in lots of time posting and scheduling social media content on Instagram, without getting much in return or anything. With the Instagram affiliate program, you'll be able to begin to earn a commission on eligible products from other Creators that you feature in your content. As you can see, this potentially diverts traffic from your business over to theirs. You'll be able to earn a small commission - amounts have not been released yet. We anticipate it will be a very small amount. While your business won't get rich from using the native Instagram affiliate tool, you'll at least have the opportunity to add an additional revenue stream to your business. One thing to keep in mind is that you'll want to put your effort into areas that generate the most revenue. Otherwise, you could be spending a lot of time posting and sharing other products from your competitors or other Creators, which could dilute your own marketing message. Other Social Media News Mentioned Here are some additional social media news topics that we covered on our weekly live social media marketing talk show that are worth checking out. Instagram broke down how the algorithm works. Instagram rolled out Drops, a way to showcase products to boost sales. You can now display pronouns to your Pinterest account. Pinterest is expanding shopping to more regions. FOMO or JOMO In Business, Which Matters Most? This week, we talked with May King Tsang about FOMO or the fear or missing out. Here are the tips that she shared about this topic. What is FOMO and why is it important for business? FOMO is the fear of missing out and we want to generate that positive buzz and excitement across our socials. FOMO is important for business as we help the lurkers move along in their customer journey with us. For example, knowing our brand to getting in touch with us or referring us. The customer and referral journey has a 5 step process that I have termed BRAND. B - Building your brand + community (if you don’t have a community and I don’t mean fans and followers, work hard to build the community first) R - relationship building with your lurkers A - Authority + BTS (not the KPop band Behind-the-Scenes) N - Notoriety - get famous + create your own PR agency on social media D - Direct Communication - stand out by getting personal is equally important in business - to help us as business owners. What I mean by personal is a voice message, a private Instagram story or a personalized video by using VidYard or a recorded video from your smartphone that you can upload. What is JOMO and is it equally important in business? Do not compare your chapter 5 with someone else’s chapter 25 – Candace Denise (I shared the virtual platform with this incredible lady on International Women’s Day when she said that. We’re all guilty of it, and it’s not good for us. We don’t know how far ahead other people are. And the more time we spend on comparing ourselves to others, the less time we are spending on our own business. JOMO also refers to shiny objects. Do we as marketers need to jump on the latest app, the next best thing? And don’t get me wrong, I have been guilty of this too!! We all do it. Stay in your own lane. Don’t worry about the shiny objects. There are other things in life that are just as important such as working on our business, being fully present amongst our family. Taking time out for ourselves – the joy of missing out. How does someone get started generating FOMO for their business? Go back to the 5 steps B R A N D: B: and see how well your brand comes across online. Get the basics right and move from there. R: are you scheduling and not interacting with others? Are you getting involved in conversations and replying to other people’s posts and being (to quote John Espirian) “relentlessly helpful”? Create content for the lurkers by replying and finding opportunities to help others. A: how are you demonstrating your authority in your field? Are you showing BTS or just the final product? People are interested in the inner workings of your business, so do a lot of show and tell. You might not think it’s interesting, but it’s interesting to others. N: It’s not bragging if you can back it up – Muhammad Ali. Tell the world about your testimonials, the comments you’ve received. Showcase the impact you have made on others. The ROI, the feedback, how you made your clients feel. D: Reach out to people more, when the time is right. Timing is everything. Reach out too soon and you’ll be seen as spam and salesy and yucky. Prove that you are worth looking into. Tool of the Week FOMO This week, we talked about FOMO. Do you want your products on your website to be top-of-mind? You need to spend time telling your audience about them. If your website generates traffic, you can add the FOMO tool to it. This will add a pop-up to your site, that shows when visitors take an action, such as signing up for a newsletter, buying a product that you sell, and more. This will help to generate FOMO for other website visitors and encourage them to look into what your visitors were buying (and hopefully buy too). You can try the FOMO tool on your website free for 14 days. The FOMO tool starts at $19 per month. If you need more than 250,000 notifications per month, you can upgrade to the FOMO Plus plan for $79 per month. Generate FOMO on your website Wrap-up To sum it up this week, we discussed the Instagram affiliate program, a way for Creators to earn commissions by selling products from other Instagram accounts. In addition to the affiliate program from Instagram, they're also going to reward you by running challenges with badges on Instagram and Facebook Stars Challenges.
